Today in legal and military [and occasional oddities] history
1792 The New York Stock Exchange was established when a group of 24 brokers and merchants met by a tree on what is now Wall Street and signed the Buttonwood Agreement
1875 The first Kentucky Derby is run at Churchill Downs in Louisville Kentucky
2006 The aircraft carrier USS Oriskany is sunk in the Gulf of Mexico as an artificial reef

It's interesting to learn when and how the NY stock exchange initiated.
ReplyDeleteLast year I read Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Hoah Harari. In this amazing book he teaches us to think about the myths we live by. One example he gives is when Peugeot became incormportated. Un happy customers could no longer sue the man, they had to sue a company. We had to believe in the existence of a company, stocks and the value of money.
Now it's all virtual money. It would be interesting to know when other countires stock markets were established.
Interesting concept for a book, and that example does make you think. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
DeleteAnd don't worry about typos, but do get some coffee =)
