The 2020 Summer Olympics were delayed a year because of the pandemic.  They began in Tokyo on July 23, 2021 and ran through August 8, 2021.  The 2022 Winter Olympics began in Beijing on February 4, 2022 and ran through February 20, 2022.

Originating in Galveston, Texas, and commemorating the end of slavery in the US, Juneteenth has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since the end of the Civil War in 1865.

On December 8, 2021, Angela Merkel stepped down as German chancellor, after serving for 16 years.

Angela Merkel became the first female Chancellor of Germany in 2005 and held that position for 16 years.  She was raised in East Germany before the wall fell, and has a PhD in Physical Chemistry.
