R is for Remote Working and Schooling

This year for the A-to-Z Challenge, I'll be looking at major events that happened in 2020 [the year we would all like to forget, so let's look at it first, before flushing it down the toilet].

Welcome to R!  We're looking at – REMOTE WORKING AND SCHOOLING.

In mid-March 2020, my state, California, basically shut down.  There were almost NO cars on the freeways for over a month!  My job is considered essential, so I still drove to the office, which previously had required 60 minutes but during March 2020 that time was reduced to 30 minutes!  Yay!  The best part of this pandemic.

My college kids fired up their computers and logged into classes from home.  They missed their friends but overall it worked okay for them.  Younger kids did not have such an easy transition, and many people believe students kindergarten through high school  lost an entire year of education, and it will be a struggle not only to catch up, but to re-connect with their social groups.

I worked from home for a month, while my family recovered from COVID.  But even while working from the office, I made court appearances by phone and video.  Definitely an interesting experience.  My advice - know how to use your computer!

How did your family handle remote work or school?

Here's a teaser for tomorrow, letter S:

  1. I remember this video, so fun! Poor dad ;)
We are lucky to have jobs that allow to work from home. I enjoy it a lot now!

    1. That must have been hugely embarrassing, especially since he didn't know how to shut it off!

  2. I had to keep working, so my wife got stuck with the home schooling. I have no idea how some families managed to cope!

    1. Coping loomed high in 2020, and even now in 2021 we're still trying to cope. Not a fun time for anyone.

  3. Dena, this recalling 2020 is getting depressing. There was so much I missed, the actual building of the things I design, the camaraderie of my employees helping.

I feel like I am still stuck in a hole and pumping out plans.

We held 2021 up light a torch to light our way out of 2020. Now 2021 kind of feels like 2020.1

Even the words that I write fall like dust, dust that doesn't even fly in a stiff breeze.

I know I have it better than many, I am making lots of money, but it still isn't palatable, and the politics of it all makes we want to puke.

    1. I agree that it seems like 2020.1 and the politics right now are definitely ugly. Let's hope for a better second half of 2021!

  4. Heckle suffered terribly as a result of online learning while Jeckle's school aced it. According to Jeckle's school, some kids thrived, some stayed the same and some floundered terribly. One thing our local government did, though, was to supply internet to every school child so no-one was disadvantaged from lack of internet.

    1. I'm glad to hear about the internet. That's huge to help kids try to keep up. Sorry about Heckle tho. Must be hard on him.
