April 3, ____ - The first Pony Express rider left St. Joseph, Missouri. For $5 an ounce, letters were delivered 2,000 miles to California within ten days. The service lasted less than two years, until the beginning of the telegraph.

April 4, ____ - Twelve nations signed the treaty creating NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. 

April 6, ____ - After a break of 1500 years, the first Olympics of the modern era was held in Athens, Greece.

April 9, ____ - The US Civil War ended as General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox.
