1783 Britain declared a formal cessation of hostilities with its former colonies, the United States of America
 

1789 George Washington, the commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, is unanimously elected the first president of the United States by all 69 presidential electors. John Adams is elected vice president.
 

1861 The Confederate States of America is established when the Provisional Congress convenes in Montgomery Alabama
 

2008 US district court judge Florence-Marie Cooper rules that President George W. Bush cannot exempt the US Navy from complying with environmental laws banning sonar training. Later in the year, the US Supreme Court overturns this ruling.
