A to Z Challenge - A is for ASVAB

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
[did you get it right?]

The ASVAB is a timed test given at more than 14,000 schools and Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) nationwide.  It is developed and maintained by the Department of Defense.

“Your scores in four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge (see below) -- count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether you're qualified to enlist in the US military.”

Your scores in the other areas of the ASVAB determine how qualified you are for certain jobs and enlistment bonuses.

Tests:

**critical areas

Arithmetic reasoning **
Word knowledge **
Paragraph comprehension **
Mathematics knowledge **
General science
Electronics information
Automotive and shop information
Mechanical comprehension
Assembling objects
Verbal expression

AFQT scores are given as percentiles between 1-99. The reference group is a sample of 18 to 23 year old youth who took the ASVAB as part of a national norming study conducted in 1997. Thus, an AFQT score of 90 indicates the examinee scored as well as or better than 90% of the reference group.

My son took the ASVAB when he was 18 years old.  His score was 99. [I'm his mother. I'm allowed to brag =)]

What's next for B?
B is for Boatswain's Mate.  What's a Boatswain's Mate?  In which branch of the military would you find one?  What do they do?  Come back tomorrow and find out!

    1. Yep, altho the minimum scores aren't that bad if you have a HS diploma. And theoretically, if you have a HS diploma you should be able to achieve the minimum score.

And yes, I like to brag about my Navy son =)

  6. Brag away, Dena! I find the use of the word "battery" odd - after reading your first line expanding the acronym I assumed it was going to be a physical test. I thin kbecause I jumped to "battering ram". My brain can be a scary place!

    1. Yep, a "battery" of tests. But I agree with you that your brain can be a scary place. Serial killers!

  7. Wow! So did your son know where he wanted to serve? Looks like he could have taken his pick of the different services.

    1. He wanted to be in the Navy as a Seabee. With that score the recruiters were all trying to convince him to sign as a cyber-techie specialist but he stuck to his guns and enlisted as a Seabee.

  8. Yes, I knew what it meant. My middle and youngest son both took them and scored very high. The navy wanted my middle son to take a job on nuclear subs and I can't remember now what it was. That was frightening.

Will was supposed to be a Bradley mechanic and then they got rid of the Bradleys so he wound up in supply and as an armorer. He can repair just about any kind of weapon and designed some weapons parts systems while he was in Iraq that the other companies started using.

Oddly enough, a good skill with weapons will get you lots of job offers with security contractors when you get out. "Hey, want to fight pirates?"

Yep, I know what boatswain is, but looking forward to the post. PS, you're allowed to brag, that's a really high score.

    1. The cyber-techie specialist they wanted him for was on a nuke, but he wanted to be outside [why he didn't join the Army I don't know] and not on a ship, so he joined as a Seabee - construction electrician.

  9. I am still confused between ASVAB and AFQT. What is the difference between the two?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, the military has way too many acronyms! ASVAB is the entire test. AFQT is the part of the test which includes the four critical areas. So a correct sentence would read "My son took the ASVAB and his AFQT score was 99." The AFQT score is what qualifies you to join the military. Your score on the rest of the test determines whether you qualify for certain jobs or bonuses. Thanks for asking!

I never knew there was a test for the US armed forces like that - in fact I have no idea if there is one for the UK either :).
