A to Z Challenge - Y is for Yeoman

Yeomen are the office workers of the Navy and Coast Guard.  They handle payroll [always important!], prepare travel orders and arrange transportation, draft correspondence, write evaluations and reports, greet visitors, handle telephone calls and mail, and maintain files and administrative records.  Most Yeoman positions are on land, although there are a few positions on-board ships and submarines.

Similar to unit or company clerk in the Army [think Radar on M*A*S*H].

They are still sailors, and are required to complete boot camp and A-school.  And for an "office job", they receive full military benefits and can be deployed overseas.

What's next for Z?
Z is for Military Pay [I wanted to include pay, and this was the best place to do it.  Yes it's not a Z.  So sue me].  How much are brand new enlisted servicemembers paid?  What's the military pay scale?  Benefits?  Come back Monday and find out!

  3. Yeoman have important jobs! Thank you for sharing! I happen to know what new enlisted military persons get paid. My son starts boot camp in July and has filled me in on all the things.

  4. That sounds like the place I'd be less of a danger to anyone else in the military! ;)

Z as in "Zoiks! I Get Paid How Much??!"?

  5. I didn't know about Yeomen, but there's no way I'm suing you - you know way too much about the military for me to do that!
    Great post!

  6. So THAT’s what they do! I always did wonder what Yeoman Rand did apart from bringing Kirk his coffee and the salad prescribed by Dr McCoy... 😉

  7. Daddy joined the Navy to see the world. He left after 2 years because all he did was work with numbers on a ship.

He joined the Air Force a few years later and ended up career Air Force--in Finance! He was yo-yoed between the panhandle of Texas and Florida, with stints in Vietnam and an accompanied tour to the Azores (island chain in the middle of nowhere).

During the Vietnam "conflict" that sure seemed like a war, he carried pay to the troops on the frontlines. He went alone, armed with only a sidearm.

So much for "office" jobs not being dangerous. Military is military. Our Vets deserve our respect and honor. Thanks for sharing about Yeomen.

    1. You're right. Military is military, even for a so-called "office job". All military jobs are important. Please thank your father for his service.

  8. I've always loved the word "yeoman". Much better title than some of the others in the navy!
