1798 The first serious fist fight occurs in Congress

1804 New Jersey becomes the last northern state to abolish slavery

1838 In defiance of the new “gag rule” adopted 19 December 1837, Representative John Quincy Adams introduces 350 petitions against slavery into the House. The petitions are tabled.

1869 Charges of treason against Jefferson Davis are dropped

1879 President Rutherford Hayes signed a bill allowing female attorneys to argue cases before the Supreme Court

1898 USS Maine blew up in Havana harbor, touching off the Spanish-American War

1946 ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer), the first electronic general-purpose computer, is formally dedicated at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia 

1965 Canada adopts maple leaf flag
