1790 Congress authorized the first US census.
 

1803 Ohio becomes the 17th state to join the Union.
 

1867 Nebraska becomes the 37th state to join the Union.
 

1875 Congress passes the Civil Rights Act, which is invalidated by the Supreme Court in 1883.
 

1893 Electrical engineer Nikola Tesla gives the first public demonstration of radio in St. Louis, Missouri.
