W is for Wildfires

This year for the A-to-Z Challenge, I'll be looking at major events that happened in 2020 [the year we would all like to forget, so let's look at it first, before flushing it down the toilet].

Welcome to W!  We're looking at – Wildfires.

Here in California, summer 2020 was one of the worst fire seasons in recorded history.  More than four million acres burned.  Here's a map.  Here's another map:

From late 2019 through early 2020, Australia experienced one of its worst fire seasons in recorded history.  More than 46 million acres burned.  There's even a separate Wikipedia article on it.

Interesting bit of trivia – in the US, these fires are called brushfires.  In Australia, they're called bushfires.

Have you ever been impacted by a wildfire?

Here's a teaser for tomorrow, letter X:

  1. I'm from California, too, and I discussed the fires as one of my F entries, as well as a Gender reveal party that worsened the fires (under G).

    1. That gender reveal party fire was really close to my house too. Nasty stuff.

  2. In Florida we used to get droughts in the late spring. The beginning of the monsoon season has thunderboomers that don't rain, so the state has gone up in smoke numerous times.

That seems to have changed here. Out humidity starts earlier in the year and we haven't seen a drought for a while. The climate change that has caused us to have more moisture in our air has worked the opposite way for you.

You wildfires have looked pretty consistent the past few seasons. I hope you can get out of that rut, but the cost is going to be big. Even good intentions can't trump stupid actions.

    Good luck.

    1. We don't even have "fire season" any more. It's all 12 months now. =(

  3. I didn't realise you called yours brushfires (I thought you called them wildfires). Ours are called bush fires because it's the bush that burns :) And the fires were awful. We didn't think things could get any worse and than covid hit *sigh*

    1. They're brushfires because it's the brush that burns. Same stuff I think. You Aussies just have a different term for it.

  4. Definitely felt the effects of the fires in our state. Our annual Boulder Creek Golf tournament had to be cancelled, first time in over 20 years!

    1. Fires and COVID ended up cancelling most things in 2020. Not fun.
