A to Z Blogging Challenge. My topic is MILITARY DEFINITIONS.
Q – Quebec
morse code – dash dash
dot dash
Q-route —
preplanned shipping lanes in mined or potentially mined waters, kept clear of mines to provide safe passage for friendly shipping.
Quartermaster – in the
Army, a relatively senior soldier who supervises the storeroom and distributes
supplies and provisions. In the Navy,
the enlisted member in charge of navigation; the maintenance, correction, and
preparation of nautical charts and navigational instruments; and the training
of the ship's lookouts and helmsmen.
Quonset hut - a lightweight, prefabricated structure of
corrugated steel.
It's interesting how different the quartermasters are in the army and the navy!
ReplyDeleteYes. I've noticed that several "jobs" are different among the different services.
DeleteI came thisclose to using Quartermaster for my entry today, but I couldn't find an antagonist willing to kill a quartermaster, so I had to abandon it for a new plan.
ReplyDeleteThe one you used was good, but I still like my suggestion best =)
DeleteI have quartermasters all over my fantasy series. And Quonset Hut is entirely new to me.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. And I'd heard of a quonset hut but never knew exactly what it was.
DeleteWow, the naval Quartermaster has a lot more to do than the Army Quartermaster. So I wonder which branch "Q" in the James Bond books worked for? As I recall, that's what "Q" stands for, after all.
ReplyDelete... was Q even in the books? Maybe he was a creation of the movies... I don't recall. I need to re-read the books, evidently! :)
DeleteLOL you're talking to yourself on MY blog now =)
DeleteYes, always read the books, even if you watched the movies.
I love that word, quonset! ~Liz http://www.lizbrownleepoet.com
ReplyDeleteYes, so do I!
DeleteI'm enjoying these so much. I didn't realize there was so much difference between navy and army quarternmasters.
ReplyDeleteWill's MOS was Bradley tank mechanic. He was mainly working as a quartermaster and armorer and occasionally driver to the CO when he wanted to go out on convoy.
We had a a quonset hut on the ranch. They're preferred in the north because they don't cave so much with snow.
I shall return!!
My son worked a supply room when he was in Okinawa. I don't know if he had the official title of quartermaster tho. Usually he's an electrician but he's been trained in all the construction jobs.
